Chelsea are hoping they may be able to bring back former manager Jose Mourinho for a cut price deal in the close season.
The Independent report that Mourinho and his current club Real Madrid are both so desperate to part ways that they are willing to negotiate the get out clause in the Portuguese manager’s contract.
He signed a new deal after winning back the La Liga title last year and has three years remaining on his contract. However, both parties are happy to negotiate down from the £10.2m-a-year salary, that it would take to remove Mourinho from his position, in order to get a quick and painless split.
Alonso could join Mourinho
If Mourinho were to join the Blues it is likely that he would want to bring World Cup winner Xabi Alonso with him. The former Liverpool star has been one of Mourinho’s few allies at the Bernabeu.
Alonso would love another spell abroad before finishing his career at his boyhood club, Real Sociedad. He has already been a hit in the Premier League.
He was part of the Liverpool team that won the Champions League in 2005 and then lost out on the title by just four points to Manchester United in 2009. Liverpool have never been the same since he left.
Could he work with Michael Emenalo?
Mourinho would also want to bring Atletico Madrid’s Radamel Falcao to Chelsea. The pair have the same agent and the Columbian striker is the sort of superstar that owner Roman Abramovich loves.
The Independent also claim that the Special One would not have a problem working with Chelsea’s technical director, Michael Emenalo. However, the Daily Mirror make the opposite claim.
Their chief Football writer Martin Lipton says that Mourinho had wanted total control if he was to return to Chelsea but was told that Emenalo would be staying in charge of player recruitment.
Mourinho and Chelsea’s alternatives
If Mourinho isn’t happy with that then he could well end up swapping jobs with Paris Saint-Germain’s Carlo Ancelotti, who is widely tipped to replace him at Madrid.
Chelsea would then look to Malaga’s Manuel Pellegrini or Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp. David Moyes and Gianfranco Zola are also amongst the candidates.
Abramovich wants the glory days back
The Daily Star say that it could cost Abramovich as much as £200m to recruit Mourinho and bring the glory days back to Stamford Bridge. Mourinho’s buyout clause, his salary, and the transfer fees and wages for potential targets such as Falcao, Andre Schurrle, Hulk, Sami Khedira and Fabio Coentrao will quickly add up.
Chelsea are in the Europa League semi-final but have lost six of the seven competitions they have entered this season. The Star says that Abramovich is willing to pay whatever it takes to bring back his team’s ruthless winning mentality.
