Arsene Wenger has made Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Götze his number one transfer target according to the Mail.
The Frenchman has a £70m transfer kitty at his disposal and is ready to veer from his traditional policy and spend big this summer.
The accusation of Arsenal becoming a selling club to Europe’s elite in recent years has irked Wenger, and he wants to put his side back in contention with the top clubs in England and Europe.
Wenger willing to spend big money
That means spending big money on top players and Mario Götze fits the bill. The German has been one of Borussia’s best players in the past couple of seasons and has starred in their charge to the semi finals of the Champions League.
Wenger’s recent signings have been less than inspiring. Marouane Chamakh was a disaster while the jury is still out on Gervinho, Giroud and Podolski.
Götze is the man Wenger wants to add some creativity to his attack, as well as send out a message to his rivals.
Many of Europe’s top clubs will be interested in the German but the Arsenal boss is willing to spend whatever it takes to get his man.
Wenger wouldn’t admit it, but a victory for Götze and his side in the Champions League would make him an even more attractive signing.
After years of underachieving, with his side playing pretty football without putting tropies in the Emirates’ cabinet, Wenger realises that he has to change his approach.
The system of buying unknown players that brought him success in the late nineties and earlys 2000’s is no longer working.
The Arsenal dressing room is lacking in players that have won major tournaments and even at 20 years old, if Götze had a Champions League winners medal, his experience would be key at Arsenal.
