Manchester United go into tonight’s game with West Ham knowing they need just seven points to clinch the title.
However, senior players in the dressing room are targeting maximum points from their remaining six games to set a Premier League record.
If United can win all their remaining fixtures then they achieve a total of 98 points. That would beat the record of 95 points Chelsea currently hold for a 38 game season.
Robin Van Persie, who ended his goalscoring drought from the penalty spot on Sunday said: “We don’t just want to try to win the league by getting the points we need, we want to get maximum points now from the games remaining.”
The Dutchman has been terrific for United this season and many pundits believe he is the main reason the title is heading to Old Trafford.
Rio wants the title won first
Rio Ferdinand also mentioned that the record is in the players’ mind but stressed the importance of not focusing on anything other than getting the title sewn up. Speaking in the Telegraph Ferdinand said: “We’ve got to make sure we finish the season correctly and get this title back. We’re not far off it but it’s not over until it’s over.”
“We have to make sure we remain focused and apply ourselves in the right way to achieve it. We’ve churned out results through hard work and preparing ourselves in the right way.
“We have to continue that. It’s some going that record and we can’t let one or two recent bad results undo all the hard work that we’ve done.
“When I look around the changing room I expect us to be winning games nine times out of 10. I believe in the squad, believe we can win games in various different ways, winning ugly, playing fluent football, keeping a clean sheet.”
Anderson on his way out of Old Trafford
Elsewhere at United, it looks like Anderson’s time at Old Trafford is coming to an end. The Brazilian has never established himself in the first team since his arrival from Porto six years ago.
Sir Alex Ferguson has lost patience in him, and is happy to let him go this summer. The player still has two years remaining on his contract and Fergie thinks the time is right to cut his losses and get some money back for him.
Porto are keen on re-signing Anderson and will make their move in the summer. Porto’s Colombian midfielder, James Rodriguez may head to Old Trafford as part of any deal struck between the clubs.
