A report in today’s Mail reveals that Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic was watched by Man Utd scouts during his match for Bosnia on Friday. It is widely believed that United will try to sign the keeper in the summer to provide genuine competition for their current number one, David De Gea.
De Gea has seen off Anders Lindegaard but Sir Alex Ferguson still remains unconvinced the Spanish stopper is the long term answer in the United goal.
Begovic is highly thought of by all of the big clubs in England and abroad with Chelsea and Arsenal both keeping tabs on his situation at Stoke.
Stoke resigned to losing him in summer
Although publicly Stoke say they want to keep Begovic, privately they are resigned to losing him this summer and hope to start a bidding war between the big clubs. They signed England youngster Jack Butland from Birmingham in the January transfer window as a ready-made replacement for next season.
Begovic spoke to Sport.ba in Bosnia: “I’m pleased that the big clubs are interested in me but as I have said many times – I’m happy at Stoke City because they gave me a chance to play in Premier League.
“We will see what will happen in the summer. In football you can never know 100 per cent.”
Begovic’s comments will hardly do anything to deter potential bidders. He is surely now planning which Champions League club he wants to play for next season.
