Tottenham are ready to put their end of season disappointment behind them and provide manager Andre Villas-Boas with big money to spend in the summer transfer window.
A report in today’s Sun says that the North London club will be aiming to pull off a £30m swoop on Barcelona’s David Villa and Leandro Damiao of Brazililan club, Internacional.
One of Tottenham’s big problems was their goalscoring record in the Premier League last season. Too often they relied on Gareth Bale but AVB is hoping the combination of youth and experience will help to take some of the burden off the Welsh superstar next season.
Villa has won it all
David Villa has won everything there is to win at both club and international level. At 31 years of age he may be ready to leave Barcelona where he has often been injured or overshadowed by other superstars. He is likely to have a few good years left but will cost around £10m.
Tottenham tried to sign Damiao in January but their £16m bid was turned down. Many see this as a key factor in the club’s failure to break into the top four.
Damiao has scored 82 goals in 147 games for Internacional but at 23 he is ready to make the move to European football. He is likely to cost £20m but Tottenham will face competition for his signature from Atletico Madrid who will be looking to replace Radamel Falcao.
AVB must spend big to reach top four
Tottenham’s net spend in the transfer market throughout last season was just £3.8m. That was enough for AVB to make his mark on the club as they stormed to their highest ever points total in the Premier League.
Unfortunately for them it wasn’t enough to reach the Champions League as Chelsea leapfrogged them after their own spending spree reached a net total of £75m.
It is clear that any club that wants to join the top four will need to splash the cash and the manager has done enough to earn the chance to spend big money.
