Tottenham are set to battle it out with Everton and Sunderland to sign Ghana international Christian Atsu.
The Daily Mirror report that all three clubs are interested in the 21-year-old winger whose contract runs out at the end of next season.
Even if Tottenham fail to reach the Champions League they will have an edge over their rivals as manager Andre Villas Boas knows Atsu from their time together at FC Porto. It was AVB who first brought the youngster into the senior squad.
Champions League experience
After AVB joined to Chelsea, Atsu was sent on a season long loan to Rio Ave. He scored six goals in 30 games for Rio and helped them to avoid relegation.
This season he has been back at Porto but his first team chances have been limited. He has so far only played 10 league games, although he has featured in six of his club’s Champions League games.
Atsu has refused to sign a new contract and that has alerted the bosses at Premier League clubs. He has an £8m buyout clause and AVB will want to bring him to White Hart Lane as his squad has struggled to cope with injuries to Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon.
Everton and Sunderland also keen
Everton are also interested and believe he could add another attacking dimension to their play. He could be the difference between the Goodison Park side having a good season and a great one.
Sunderland are desperate for some creativity in their side. Adam Johnson has been disappointing in his first season while Stephane Sessegnon has also been inconsistent.
However, Moyes and Di Canio will have to be very persuasive if they are to land the youngster as the Mirror report that he wants to play for AVB.
