David Moyes wants to sign both Cesc Fabregas and Marouane Fellaini for Man Utd this summer to put his own mark on the squad he inherited from Sir Alex Ferguson.
Moyes has taken on what many consider to be the toughest job in football, following the most successful manager in history.
On the other hand though, Fergie left the club in fantastic shape and Moyes goes into Old Trafford to manage a superb squad that won the title by a mile last season.
United must start well
Man Utd have to hit the ground running in the Premier League otherwise Moyes will inevitably come under scrutiny. To step out of Ferguson’s shadow is a difficult task. Moyes will want to build a team of his own, but there is nothing to be gained from dismantling the squad he has.
With Chelsea now led by their former boss Jose Mourinho, Man City also under new management, and Arsenal promising to bring in big players to compete for the title, Moyes knows he has to add to his squad to keep up with his rivals.
United weak in central midfield
The Scot has identified the central midfield positions as the part of the squad that most needs improving. Paul Scholes has now retired for the second and final time, Darren Fletcher’s future is still uncertain due to health problems. Tom Cleverley is still a raw youngster and Anderson has never performed consistently in six years at Utd.
That leaves only Michael Carrick as a real top class central midfielder at the club. Moyes wants to address this weakness and has set about trying to bring in two big names to fill the gap.
Fabregas can’t get into Barcelona’s first team
The Guardian report that United made a £26m bid for former Arsenal captain and Barcelona benchwarmer Cesc Fabregas this week. The bid was initially rejected but it is thought that Barca are willing to sell and just holding out for a better price.
Fabregas left Arsenal in 2011 but has struggled to force his way into Barcelona’s first team ahead of superstars Xavi and Iniesta. He has said he doesn’t want to leave the Nou Camp but could be forced out as he isn’t considered a key player by coach Tito Vilanova.
Moyes brough Fellaini to the Premier League
Moyes wants to pair Fabregas in the United midfield with his former player Marouane Fellaini. The Belgian powerhouse has attracted interest from Chelsea and Arsenal this summer and Everton are resigned to losing him, given that he has a release clause in his contract if a club bids £23m for him.
It was Moyes that brought Fellaini to the Premier League, when he signed him for Everton for £15m from Standard Liege. The Belgian would be keen to work with Moyes again, this time at the biggest club in the country with a real chance of winning silverware at the end of each season.
If Moyes can land both players then he will have a midfield pair that could be up there with the great pairing of Roy Keane and Paul Scholes of the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Fabregas has the class and vision, while Fellaini is a massive physical presence and both are well capable of chipping in with their share of goals.
