Per Mertesacker is a summer target for Bundesliga side Wolfsburg according to the Daily Mail. The big German has had a difficult time at the Emirates since arriving two years ago.
He has been blamed by some of the fans and media for Arsenal’s poor defensive record against the big teams. Mertesacker has been accused of being too slow and unable to cope with the pace of the English Premier League.
However, with over 80 caps for Germany, Mertesacker is still highly rated in his homeland and Wolfsburg are one of several Bundesliga sides keeping tabs on his position at the Emirates.
Wenger’s £70m war chest
Arsene Wenger has shown interest in Swansea captain Ashley Williams and his arrival could pave the way for Mertesacker to leave.
The Arsenal board are believed to have made £70m available to Wenger to revamp his squad this summer, in order to get it up to the required standard to mount a genuine title challenge.
Emirates insiders believe that despite the high profile struggles of the team this season, the Arsenal squad is not that far away from being able to challenge the two Manchester clubs.
If Wenger is able to bring in three or four real world class players this summer, then Arsenal may have a chance of ending their ongoing trophy drought.
