Good news for Chelsea fans as the club insist that playmaker Juan Mata will not be leaving the club this summer.
There had been reports in Spain that manager Jose Mourinho would be willing to listen to offers for Mata and that Barcelona were preparing to make a bid. However, a report in the Daily Mirror today says that the Chelsea boss sees the Spaniard playing a key role for the team next season.
Mata has become a huge star
Mata has established himself as a huge star in the Premier League in his two seasons at Stamford Bridge. He has scored 32 goals and made 59 assists in 118 games for the Blues in all competitions. He has helped the club win the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League.
Mata was also a success with Valencia before he joined Chelsea and reports in Spain this week had suggested that Barcelona were prepared to spend up to £30m to bring him back to La Liga.
The Spanish media also said that Mourinho was blocking talks of a pay rise for Chelsea’s player of the season and was looking to move Eden Hazard inside to take over Mata’s ‘number 10’ playmaker position.
Mourinho will reassure the playmaker
Chelsea are said to be annoyed at what they see as an attempt by Barcelona to unsettle their star player. Mourinho had intended to wait until after the Confederations Cup to speak to any of his players that are involved in it, but will now seek to reassure Mata that there is no truth to the rumours in the Spanish media as soon as possible.
Ba and Torres could be leaving
The future might not be quite as rosy for strikers Fernando Torres and Demba Ba. The Mirror say that Mourinho is considering letting both players leave the club to make way for new faces.
Mourinho is said to be looking to bring either Hulk or Edinson Cavani to Stamford Bridge.
