Chelsea defender David Luiz has said that he thinks Sergio Agüero owes him an apology after his studs up challenge in the FA cup semi final yesterday.
The City striker was lucky to stay on the pitch after he scraped his studs down Luiz’s leg in an horrific challenge.
Agüero escaped unpunished after the ref failed to see the incident. He may, however face retrospective from the FA if they decide to review the challenge.
Luiz willing to move on
The incident was late in the game when City were leading 2-1. It followed an alleged elbow in the face of Agüero from Luiz.
The little forward marred his goalscoring display with an ugly challenge that looked reckless at best, malicious and pre-meditated at worst. That will be for the FA to decide.
Chelsea’s Brazilian defender has spoken about the challenge in the Guardian today: “”Many people say to me about this tackle. Agüero is a great player and I think he needs to be honest with himself and say: ‘I don’t like to do bad tackles, I don’t like to do that.”
“I forgive everyone in my life. People are happy when Agüero is scoring goals, doing things in the game. Many people have said to me: ‘Sorry this is not me and not good for the football.’ Many kids see the game.”
Both sides still have a trophy to play for
It was certainly a nasty tackle. The rivalry between Brazil and Argentina is a possible reason for Agüero’s actions, but certainly can’t be used as an excuse.
However, it is unlikely the challenge had an effect on the outcome of the game, with Chelsea pressing for an equaliser in the latter stages already. Although had City’s forward been dismissed it would obviously have put them under more pressure.
City now face Wigan in the final of the FA cup, while Chelsea have a Europa League semi final with Spurs conquerors, Basel coming up.
With United running away with the Premier League, it means both Chelsea and Man City have the chance to win a trophy this season. The FA cup could be enough to keep Roberto Mancini his job at City, but it looks like Rafa Benitez will be leaving Chelsea whatever he brings back for the trophy cabinet.
