It looks as though Liverpool are going to beat Arsenal to the signature of Wales international Ashley Williams.
Both clubs had been linked with the Swansea defender but the Daily Mirror report that he is likely to choose Liverpool thanks to his links with manager Brendan Rodgers.
The Mirror also reveal that Williams was a Liverpool fan as a youngster and would fulfil his dream by stepping on to the Anfield turf in the famous red shirt. Liverpool are in need of an experienced centre back as Kop legend Jamie Carragher is retiring at the end of the season.
Williams idolised John Barnes when he was growing up and a source told the Mirror: “”The truth is that Ash is a massive Liverpool fan and he would go on his hands and knees all the way to Anfield if it meant a move to the club he supported as a kid.”
Wenger had hoped to sign the defender
It is disappointing news for Arsene Wenger who is a long term admirer of Williams and was ready to bid £9m for the 28-year-old in the summer.
The Daily Telegraph say that Liverpool will need a bid of around £12m if they are to sign Williams. They also claim that Rodgers is happy with the transfer policy at the club. He said: “The recruitment team has regular meetings now and we have another one this week to establish where we are in terms of the targets.
“I am confident we have a pattern of work, the players are there and it’s about the availability and the players we can afford.”
Swansea boss Michael Laudrup is reluctant to sell but will not stand in the Williams’ way as it is likely to be his last chance to sign for a big club.
