Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has warned Brendan Rodgers he must do everything in his power to keep Luis Suarez at the club.
The Uruguayan went on record recently stating that he wants to leave England, after feeling persecuted by the media.
The Liverpool fans are split as to whether they should keep Suarez, or cash in on him and use the vast amount of money he would raise, to rebuild the squad and strengthen in other areas.
Two suspensions in two years
Suarez has received lengthy suspensions in each of the past two seasons, for racially abusing Patrice Evra and then for biting Branislav Ivanovic.
Many supporters feel he is disgracing the club’s good name and want him out, despite him being a world class talent and the best player in Liverpool’s current squad.
However former strike hero Robbie Fowler thinks that Liverpool must look at the bigger picture and try to hold on to Suarez. Speaking in the Telegraph Fowler said: “Rightly, we should be critical of some of the stuff he does, but let’s look at the footballing side of him. Any side in the world with Luis Suarez is a better team, so I hope he stays at Liverpool a long time.”
January signings a success
After a tough start to life at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers was starting to build a team that looked capable of challenging for the top four towards the end of last season.
He spent wisely in the January transfer window with both Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge proving to be instant hits. To lose Suarez this summer would be a major setback for Rodgers.
Fowler also added that he thinks Liverpool should keep hold of Andy Carroll, believing that he hasn’t played to his strengths in a Liverpool shirt: “I think when he first came, he tried to play to the price tag. That sounds a little bit silly but he was trying to drop off, beat men, and do everything that you’d expect of a £35 million player.
“He looked a much player when he got to the nitty gritty, when he used his body and he was a handful and – no disrespect but – when he was a big lump.”
