Final farewell to Carlos Tevez?

It looks like Carlos Tevez’s controversial career in English football is nearing its end according to the Express. Boca Juniors are interested in taking the Manchester City forward back to his homeland this summer. Tevez played at Boca for the first three years of his career before moving to Brazil and then England.

The Argentine has endured a difficult time in England, much through his own fault. Controversy has followed him to each club he has played.

He was at the centre of a fierce dispute between the Premier League, Sheffield United and West Ham when he helped secure survival for West Ham despite being ineligible to play  due to the club breaking third party ownership laws.

Throwing insults at Fergie in the Press

At Man United, Tevez’s relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson turned sour due to a lack of first team appearances and United’s reluctance to offer him a permanent contract. The saga ended with Tevez leaving Old Trafford for their Manchester rivals City, but not before throwing insults in the Press at Ferguson and Gary Neville, one of United’s stalwarts at the time.

It seemed as though he had finally found a footballing home at Eastlands after he was signed by Mark Hughes. His attacking flair and combative style made him an instant hit with the City faithful.

A year after joining Tevez was made club captain and helped the team to their first major trophy in 35 years with the FA Cup in 2011.

That summer City signed his international team-mate Sergio Aguero and it looked as though everything was going perfectly for Tevez.

However, things turned sour in the relationship between player and fans when Tevez refused to go on as a sub with his side trailing in a Champions League game against Bayern Munich.

City manager Roberto Mancini immediately turned on him in the media and the fans quickly followed suit. The player was now public enemy number one in Manchester and fled back to his homeland in Argentina. He refused to return to City and was effectively on strike.

Images of Tevez at professional golf tournaments and tennis matches further enraged the club’s fans as their team struggled on the pitch without their best player. Manager Roberto Mancini vowed he would never play for City again.

Helps City win the title

However, Tevez was eventually brought in from the cold last season due to a string of injuries in City’s squad. In his first appearance back, he set up the winning goal for a win against title rivals Chelsea. City of course, went on to win the Premiership in dramatic style.

He is now a member of the first team squad again, but the fans have never forgiven him for his strike and it is unclear as to what his colleagues think of him.

At 29, Tevez has won the League Cup, the FA Cup, three Premier Leagues and the Champions League in England.

He achieved legendary status with West Ham fans after scoring the goals that kept them in the top flight, but fans of the two Manchester clubs will not have a good word to say about him.

Tevez has never learnt to speak English or enjoyed living in Manchester. It appears that he feels he has achieved all he can in Europe and is now ready to return home to be with his family.

His departure will be a loss to the Premier League, not least to City, but it is a shame that his off-field actions will always overshadow his abilities on the pitch.
