Chelsea’s on loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has said he wants to stay at Atletico Madrid for one more year according to the Metro.
The young Belgian wants to gather experience before returning to Stamford Bridge to challenge Petr Cech for the number one spot.
Courtois is highly rated by Chelsea and had previously suggested he would leave the club if he was not allowed the chance to stay and fight for his place in the team.
Copa del Rey victory
He has spent the past two seasons on loan at Atletico and helped them to a third place finish in La Liga and the Copa del Rey this season.
Atletico would be more than happy to keep Courtois for another year and had hoped to sign him permanently as part of any deal moving Rademel Falcao to Chelsea.
Returning Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho may even decide to recall Courtois for next season to push Cech for the first team spot as current reserves Hilario and Ross Turnbull are leaving the club this summer.
Mourinho likes competition in his squad
Mourinho is expected to take Chelsea forward next season and significantly close the gap on Man Utd who won the league and finished 14 points clear of third placed Chelsea.
When the Portuguese last arrived at Stamford Bridge he immediately made sure his squad had two top class players for every position on the pitch to create fierce competition for places.
If he does the same thing again then Courtois and Cech would certainly bring the best out of each other in the Chelsea goal.
But the young stopper tweeted to his followers that he would prefer to stay in Madrid for another year. He also thanked them for their support throughout his time at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.
