Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United career looks to be coming to an end and he could be heading to Germany for a fresh challenge.
The Daily Mirror report that the England striker has told his teammates that he would like to join Bayern Munich in the summer.
Rooney is said to have become frustrated at his role at Old Trafford. He has always been one of United’s most important players but has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Robin van Persie last summer.
Rooney wants to play in the biggest game
He was particularly unhappy at being left out of the starting line up for United’s vital Champions League second leg tie against Real Madrid in March. At 27 years of age, Rooney wants to be playing in his club’s biggest games.
Bayern are said to be ready to spend £30m in order to bring in Rooney. The Mirror say that Rooney is flattered to have been linked with the Champions League finalists who will be managed by Pep Guardiola next season.
Fierce competition at Bayern
However, if he is looking to be the first name on the team sheet he may wish to think twice about joining Bayern. The German giants have become arguably the best team in Europe and have a host of attacking talent.
Mario Gomez, Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry are already at the club. They are also looking to bring in Borussia Dortmund duo Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze. That would be plenty of competition for Rooney.
Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in signing the striker and there could be interest from an ‘elite English club’. However, it is likely that United would rather sell him to an overseas club rather than a Premier League rival.
