Sir Alex Ferguson has given young defender Phil Jones a huge boost by saying he has the potential to become Manchester United’s greatest ever player.
The 21-year-old won his first Premier League title last night as United’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa put them out of Manchester City’s reach.
With no Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic in the starting line up, Jones took his place in the centre of defence alongside Johnny Evans. The pair were comfortable against the struggling Villa team and looked like they could be United’s first choice pairing for many years to come.
High praise from Sir Alex
Jones, who can also play in midfield and at right back, has only played 20 games for United this season but Ferguson predicts he will have a huge future at the club.
The Old Trafford boss told ESPN: “Jones, arguably the way he is looking, could be our best ever player. I think Jones may be one of the best players we have ever had, not matter where we play him. At 21 years of age, he is going to be a phenomenal player. I think he can play anywhere on the pitch.”
It is an incredible statement for Ferguson to make when you consider the greats who have worn the United shirt. The club have had so many world class players over the years such as George Best, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Jones has great drive
However, Ferguson believes Jones can become one of them and even the best of the lot. He is impressed not only with Jones’ ability but his attitude as well. He said: “”He has such a massive influence, with his instinct and reading of the game. He has a drive about him.”
Having just got his first taste of title glory, Jones will be keen to become a first team regular next season and it is likely his best is yet to come.
