Today’s newspapers are full of speculation about Arsenal’s likely transfer dealings this summer.
Firstly, the Daily Star report that the Gunners will have a £70m kitty to spend and their first target will be 20-year-old Spanish playmaker, Isco.
The Malaga midfielder won the La Liga Breakthrough player award last season and has already been capped by his country despite the fierce competition for places in the Spanish midfield.
He has played a key role in Malaga’s charge to the Champions League quarter finals and scored 11 goals in all competitions so far this season. However the Star report that Arsenal will be likely to face stiff competition for Isco’s signature, especially if he continues to shine in the Champions League.
Two first team players could be leaving the club
Meanwhile the Daily Mail has focussed on who might be leaving Arsenal with captain, Thomas Vermaelen and goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny looking likely to be shown the exit door.
Vermaelen’s form has been a worry for some time. He was heavily criticised for a lack of awareness and concentration two weeks ago when both Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon were able to beat the Gunner’s nonexistent offside trap.
They then had all the time in the world to sent Tottenham into a 2-0 lead in the North London derby.
Szczesny was dropped for Wednesday’s Champions League last 16 second leg match against Bayern Munich. Manager Arsene Wenger suggested that the young Pole was mentally fatigued after playing so many games this season.
Reports that Wenger is looking for a new keeper and has his sights set on Liverpool’s Pepe Reina have not gone away all season. According to the Mail, Asmir Begovic of Stoke and Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet are also on Arsenal’s radar.
