Manchester City have emerged as the frontrunners in the race to sign Napoli’s goal machine Edinson Cavani.

The Daily mail report that the Uruguayan will be given a staggering £13.3m salary if he joins the Sky Blues in the summer.

Manchester City are desperate for a deadly striker after missing out on Robin van Persie last summer, especially as their forwards haven’t hit the heights they reached the previous year.

City need more goals

City managed 93 league goals as they won the title last season. However with just 58 goals from 32 games so far this season they will need to average 5.8 goals per game to match last season’s tally.

City’s defence is still the tightest in the league, it is their lack of goals that has seen them fall 13 points behind rivals United.

Cavani is one of the most sought after players in the world after scoring 97 goals in 131 games for Napoli. He has almost certainly fired them into next season’s Champions League although the title looks beyond reach with the Naples club 11 points behind Juventus with just six games remaining.

Competition from Real Madrid and PSG

City have been linked with Cavani for a long time and after seeing top targets such as van Persie and Edin Hazard opt for rival clubs last summer they are determined not to let the 26-year-old slip through their fingers.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain are also interested in Cavani and the player is thought to be interested in a move to the Bernabeu.

However, City have spent several weeks in talks with Cavani’s representatives and are ready to pay what it takes to get their man.
