Chelsea have told Atletico Madrid that they will have to pay £17m if they want to sign Thibaut Courtois on a permanent basis.
The highly rated 21-year-old joined Chelsea from Genk in 2011 and was immediately sent out on loan to Atletico. He has spent the last two seasons on loan at the Spanish club who would like to make the move permanent according to the Daily Star.
However, Chelsea might have scared them off by slapping such a high transfer fee on the player who is yet to play a match for his parent club.
He has played 84 games for Atletico in his two seasons at the club and has helped them into third place in La Liga. They currently have a great chance of finishing above their fierce rivals Real Madrid for the first time since Atletico won the title in 1996.
Atletico boss Diego Simeone wants to reward Courtious by bringing him to the club but Chelsea still see him as a long term replacement for Petr Cech.
The Star say that the Blues would be willing to let the Belgian go back to Atletico for a third season on loan but have ruled out the pssibliity of him being used as a makeweight in any bid for the Madrid club’s star strikier, Radamel Falcao.
