Chelsea appear to have taken the advantage in the race to sign Columbian striker Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid.
A report in the Daily Express states that the West Londoners have made the first move and held a secret meeting with Atletico chiefs.
Falcao has been a long term target for several of the biggest clubs in the Premier League with Arsenal, Chelsea and the two Manchester giants having being linked with the striker over the past year.
Chelsea looking for another coup
Recent history suggests that Arsenal won’t stand a chance once the other three get involved so it looks like being a fight between the league’s current top three.
Last summer Chelsea beat Manchester City and Manchester United to the signing of Belgian wonderkid, Edin Hazard. The signing of Falcao could be even more important to the Blues.
While United have Robin van Persie and City will certainly be looking to keep Real Madrid away from Sergio Aguero, Chelsea’s marquee front man, Fernando Torres has failed to look convincing for two and a half years.
New look Chelsea team
With Lampard looking certain to leave in the summer, they will be looking for Hazard and Oscar to step up to the next level to help Juan Mata creatively. Falcao, who is the third top scorer in La Liga behind Messi and Ronaldo, could be the final piece of the jigsaw for the new look Chelsea team.
The news will dismay Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini. Earlier in the week Mancici’s other major target Edison Cavani reeled off a list of European clubs he would consider joining if he were to leave Napoli. Tellingly, City were omitted from Cavani’s list.
Mancini is also facing the prospect of losing Aguero to Real Madrid and seeing Carlos Tevez head back home to Argentina.
