Edinson Cavani has put Manchester City and Chelsea on red alert after admitting he may leave Napoli in the summer.
The Uruguayan is one of the most sought after players in the world, after scoring 71 goals for Napoli since 2010, with 29 of those coming this season.
Real Madrid will also be interested but Cavani would favour a move to the Premier League. That makes it a two way battle between City and Chelsea, as the only sides likely to compete for such a marquee signing.
Man Utd could afford to enter the race, but Sir Alex is happy with his striking options having only signed Robin Van Persie last summer.
Arsene Wenger has a £70m transfer war chest to rebuild his side, but he would need most of that to secure Cavani so will not be interested.
Gomez the cheaper alternative
Both City and Chelsea have also got their eye on Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez. Whichever side is unsuccessful in landing Cavani, will turn to Gomez as an alternative it is reported in the Mail.
The big German has lost his place in Bayern’s starting eleven this season to Croatian Mario Mandzukic.
Gomez is unhappy at the way he is being treated. Having being the attacking focal point and main striker for the past few seasons, he now finds himself on the bench more often than not.
He didn’t start in either of Bayern’s Champions League quarter final legs against Juventus and will be second choice again for the semis with Barcelona.
Wenger could steal a march on his rivals
Gomez will be available in the summer and certainly has the pedigree to succeed in the Premier League. He has been Bayern Munich’s main striker for the past five years or so and scored three goals for Germany in the European Championships last summer.
He will be available at a good price and at only 27, has plenty more years left in him at the top level.
Wenger may surprise us all and be targeting the big German. With City and Chelsea preoccupied with trying to lure Cavani to their clubs, Arsenal could get a step up on their rivals and set the ball rolling for a deal for Gomez.
Edinson Cavani and Rademel Falcao of Atletico Madrid are the two most talked about and sought after players this summer. Have a look at our videos page comparing them to decide for yourself who will be the better buy.
