Barton in trouble after homophobic tweets

The Times report that Joey Barton has been called before the French Football Federation’s ethics committee after a posting a homophobic tweet. The tweet described Paris Saint-Germain defender, Thiago Silva as an ‘overweight ladyboy’.

It has caused a stir amongst gay rights movements and the French media. Barton was described as ‘vulgar, discriminatory and not amusing’ by a gay society in Paris. He was also on the front page of daily sports paper L’Equipe, under the heading ‘Is that British humour?’

Barton was forever in trouble during his time in England but had generally behaved himself since moving to Marseille last summer. However, this latest incident has destroyed his reputation in France.

Barton and Thiago Silva first clashed when Silva defended his fellow Brazilian Neymar after Barton had insulted him on Twitter. Barton responded by tweeting “That the same pussy thats been injured all season. Another over rated Brazilian. Sort your hamstrings out FatBoy.”

Barton was ordered to apologise by his club. He did appear to try and ease the tension with a tweet praising Silva’s performance against Barcelona in midweek, though he couldn’t resist firing another insult at his rival:

“Have to take back what I said about Thiago Silva being over rated today. Been immense tonight. Still looks like a overweight ladyboy though!”

Embarassed Marseille issue an apology

Barton’s club, Olympic Marseille are deeply embarrassed by his actions. They issued a statement saying: “Joey Barton and OM would like to present their apologies to Thiago Silva.” Barton has been warned by the club’s hierarchy to stop insulting Silva in public.

Barton though couldn’t help himself and continued his insults yesterday. He posted two further tweets referring to the Brazilian, suggesting that Silva is going through a sex change operation: “Baffles me, which way he’s going. Is he a man changing to a woman or a woman changing to a man? Can’t work it out,” and “Are you Pre-Op or Post-Op,”

Barton’s behaviour has brought shame on his club in France and further stoked the rivalry between Marseille and Paris. Thiago Silva’s agent also gave his opinion on the matter: “Barton has a serious psychological problem which necessitates urgent help.”
