Arsenal have moved their attention from Barcelona forward David Villa to his team-mate, Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez. The Gunners inquired about the availability of Villa in the January transfer window but were put off by Barcelona’s asking price for the 31 year old.
So they have changed their approach and are now hoping to sign Sanchez instead the Mail reports. At 24, he is a much younger alternative and considered to be a far better investment for the club.
Sanchez joined Barcelona in 2011 from Udinese for £22m, turning down both Man City and Man Utd. Both clubs will monitor the situation again this summer but their interests have now cooled in the player.
Constantly in Messi’s shadow
He was the hottest property in the transfer market two years ago when he left Udinese but has struggled at the Nou Camp. A succession of injuries have led to him being in and out of the side and he, like all others, is constantly in Lionel Messi’s shadow.
The Gunners will face competition though if they are to land their man. Liverpool are thought to be interested as well as Juventus, but Arsenal will make every effort to land the player in the summer.
After years of underperforming on the pitch and caution in the transfer window it is believed that Arsene Wenger is ready to change his approach. He has a reported transfer kitty of £70m and is ready to spend big money on players at their peak, in order to keep his club amongst Europe’s elite.
