Champions League Final 2007 AC Milan v Liverpool
Good start for Liverpool
Liverpool started brightly and were the better team for much of the first half.
They had the first chance of the game after eight minutes when Kuyt took control of a loose ball by rolling a perfect pass for Pennant to chase down the right hand side of the area. Pennant hit the shot on target but it was saved by Dida.
Kaka forced a good save from Reina. The Milan midfielder hit a shot from thirty yards out that bounced awkwardly in front of the Spanish goalkeeper who did well to hold on to the ball.
Mascherano picked up a loose ball in the Liverpool half and began a fast Liverpool counter attack by feeding Pennant down the right flank. Pennant played an accurate long ball to Gerrard. The Liverpool skipper did well to control the ball and get a shot in before the Milan defence could stop him but his shot went flying high over the bar.
After 26 minutes Pennant started another Liverpool attack by playing in a cross to Zenden who headed the ball into the danger area. Both sides struggled to get the ball under control and it half cleared only as far as Alonso. Alonso hit struck the ball first time from 25 yards but it flew the wrong side of the post.
Gerrard played the ball to Pennant who did well to carry the ball forward and hold off challenges from the Milan midfield. The winger played the ball into Riise whose first touch saw the ball sit up invitingly to be shot. The Norweigan hit the ball from 30 yards but it was far too high to threaten Dida’s goal.
A sucker punch from Milan
When Milan had the ball they oozed class and a rare attack from the Italians saw Liverpool a bit stretched. Kaka won a free kick on the edge of the area when he was clumsily bundled over by Alonso just before half time.
Pirlo hit a good free kick past the wall and it deflected off Inzaghi and into the goal. It was agonising for Riena who would probably have saved the free kick but had to watch helpless as the ball bounced into the area of the goal he had vacated.
It was hard on Liverpool who had been the more adventurous side. They had had more shots on goal although for the main part they had been restricted to speculative shots from outside the area. Better second half for Milan – Read more
