At €28m, Diego Milito didn’t come cheap but Mourinho has never been shy to spend whatever it takes to get the right players to create the best team possible.

Mourinho had won the Serie A title the year before with Inter but they were concerned that he hadn’t built on the achievements of former manager, Roberto Mancini. By this they meant winning the Champions League.

To address the issue, Mourinho signed the striker who had been a consistent goal machine in Spain and Italy for several years. Milito was an instant success and was instrumental in turning the champions of Italy into the champions of Europe

He scored 30 goals in 51 games in his first season as Inter won the treble of Serie A title, Coppa Italia and Champions League. He scored both goals in the Champions League final as Inter beat Bayern Munich 2-0.
