Ivory Coast had a great chance with just a few minutes left when substitute Max Gradel showed good skill and composure to create an opening for himself only for him to fire his shot wide of the far post.

The Zambians almost stole it in injury time when a beautifully dinked ball from Isaac Chancer released Mayuka.

The striker chased the ball into the area but it was brilliantly intercepted by Kolo Toure before he could get a shot in.

Stalemate after 90 minutes

As the game ended the Zambians could take heart from the fact that not only were they still in it but they had created a number of chances and could have won the game.

The Ivory Coast would be disappointed not to have won the game in normal time but would have expected their quality to eventually make the difference especially as mistakes would be made in extra time when players would start to tire.

The game moves to extra time

Ivory Coast were the first side to threaten in extra time when Drogba chased a long ball into the area but good defending from Sunzu and Mweene denied him a chance to shoot.

In the fifth minute of extra time it was the Zambians who came agonisingly close to taking the lead. A superb break down the right from substitute Felix Katongo saw him play a fantastic low ball into the danger area. His brother, Christopher was the first to get there but his shot hit was just knocked onto the post by the studs of the goalkeeper.

Both sides continued to attack but there were no more clear chances in the first half of extra time.

Second period of extra time

Ivory Coast nearly took the lead within a minute of the restart. Didier Ya Konan hit a curling shot from just outside the area. It was heading towards the top right corner and had the goalkeeper beaten but it floated just over the bar.

The Ivorians continued to pile on the pressure in the second period and the Zambia defence and midfield did extremely well to limit them to speculative balls and corner kicks. The Zambians defended well and did not allow Ivory Coast any clear cut chances.

They too were reduced to long range efforts but came close when Kalaba struck a shot from 30 yards out with five minutes to go but it flew a couple of feet wide of the top near corner.
